"X" Marks the Spot!

We are learning about the letter "X" this week in pre-k. Today we learned about the purpose of x-rays and even got the chance to create our very own x-ray! Since there are very few words that start with the letter "X", the students are allowed to bring in anything that has the letter "X" in it for show and tell on Friday. Happy "X" hunting!

Presidents Day in Pre-K

We introduced Presidents Day with a wonderful story about Abraham Lincoln, followed by the craft of creating Abraham Lincoln's log cabin from popsicle sticks. The students had a great time constructing their log cabins and learning about the 16th president!

Upon reading about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, we created a graph comparing the two. We discovered they were two very different presidents! We then went on to discuss what we would do if we were the President of the United States. Below is a sneak peak at our president portraits we started today!

"W" is for Wednesday!

Today we worked on a worm worksheet that asked us to find all the pictures that started with the "W" sound and to cut/paste them on the worm. Here is our Jolly Phonics song that goes with the letter "W" so that you may practice it at home:

(Tune: He's Got the Whole World in His Hands)
I see the clouds moving,
/w/-/w/-/w/
I see the kites flying,
 /w/-/w/-/w/
I see the trees bending,
/w/-/w/-/w/
The wind is blowing strong!

Happy Hearts in Pre-K = Valentine's Day!

A VERY special thanks to our great room moms and parent volunteers who made this day so very special for the kids! Thanks for all your hard work!

Happy Valentine's Day from Pre-K! We had a great time decorating our Valentine's Day boxes!

We even got to decorate our very own cupcakes!

We ended the day with Valentine's Day bingo and a fun "find your match" game! The students each were handed a half of a heart with a picture of an animal on it. Each student had to make the sound of their animal in order to find their fellow match. The children had a great time!

Monday Math Activities

Today I introduced the new "Love Bug" game to the math center. Students get to roll the dice and draw whatever part of the bug their number is. The first student to draw all the body parts wins. The game is great for sharpening number recognition skills and reinforcing basic facts!

Last week in math we started our new unit on graphing. The students each received a box of candy hearts and had to graph how many of each color they had, while recording their answers. Today we talked about all the different things you can graph and focused on graphing shapes.

Red & White, What a Sight!

On Thursday, February 9th the students experimented with red and white paint to create different shades of pink. They used their creations to decorate their Valentine's Day puppets. It was a great activity to introduce color creation!

Literacy Center: Building Hearts

Last week I introduced a new Valentine's game to our literacy center. The students had to put the puzzle pieces together by matching the capital letters with the lowercase letters. The children had a lot of fun comparing how many matches they made with their friends!
